Algarve Plus – Aug 2024

This month’s theme is all about Fishing

We invited Paul Kulessa to be our Guest Judge for this month’s theme.  It’s Paul’s debut as a guest judge and we appreciate his feedback.

Paul considers himself a Photographic Artist, driven by a passion for the art form rather than a desire to make it a profession. He eschews the term “Amateur” due to its perceived connotations of inferiority, instead focusing on honing his craft through various genres.

His photographic journey began in 1972 and over the years, Paul has explored diverse subjects, including people, vacation, and nature photography, with a particular affinity for capturing bugs and flowers. While he has dabbled in landscape and architectural photography, he finds greater fulfilment in travel and street photography, aiming to create exhibition-quality images that narrate a story.

Since the turn of the millennium, Paul has developed an interest in fashion and beauty photography, primarily shooting models in studio and location settings to showcase their unique beauty and make them look their best. His online presence serves as a platform to share his artistic expression.

Thanks Paul!

Thanks to all that few that have taken part and congratulations to those who were selected and can be seen in August’s edition of the Algarve Plus Magazine.

The next theme for Algarve Plus we will have to deal with is: Street Art” and will be judged by Mark Braun.

Words of Wisdom:

Image 1: A Fisherman’s Work is Never Done
This is a good story telling image. The subject is perhaps a little centered, perhaps. I like the subtle colours on the boat and
some of the colors in the various containers do seem to complement the colors in the boat as well.

Image 9: Preparation
This image really hits all the needs for the “Fishing” theme. I find it pleasant to look at and the colors are wonderful. A minor distraction is the
orange container that is so bright, slightly out of focus, and in front of the subject. I understand that it is part of the seen and part of the story. Perhaps if the maker could edit the image tone it down some it would help.

Image 5: Fishing Hook
I find this image to be strong on the theme and just a great story telling image in general. The only very minor distraction would be the two
people people in the background, but with them being so out of focus for affect this is just a very minor distraction.

Image 4: Fishing
The theme of fishing does jump right out a the viewer. The actual person fishing and the dog are silhouetted nicely. The sky is wonderful, and the shore the fisherman is standing on still maintains some definition which I find nice to look at.

Image 11: Fish on a foggy morning in Quarteira
I like the mood of this image. The theme is strong and the silhouetting of the subject helps tell the story.
