This month’s theme is something completely differnet and quite random really. There are only 10 of them but together they are infinite… “Numbers”
We invited Carly Sullens to give her verdict on the imagery which came from 12 members submitting a single image each.

Words of Wisdom
05 Abstract Four by Nigel Moore
This image drew my attention to architectural geometry and allowed me to sit with the image until I saw the compelling four in the structure. I thought this was a brilliant take on the theme of numbers. The repetition of horizontal and vertical lines, contrasted by the diagonal ascent of the staircase, establishes a sense of rhythm and balance. The muted colour palette, dominated by shades of grey and soft blues, enhances the minimalist feel, allowing the focus to remain on the shapes and textures. The lighting is soft yet sufficient to define the forms and accentuate the subtle tonal differences on the walls and steps. Overall, this image skillfully transforms a seemingly ordinary scene into an abstract visual study, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty of structure and form in an everyday setting.
8 Numbered Corks by Jan Tromp
This image invites the viewer into a world of intricate details and patterns. The choice of black and white emphasizes the textures, shadows, and unique imperfections on each cork while simultaneously simplifying the composition to focus on form rather than colour. The varying orientations and imprinted numbers create a sense of organized chaos, as though each cork holds a story or a moment in time. The use of high contrast allows for a visually engaging play of light and shadow, giving depth to the corks as they pile upon each other. Overall, this image is an excellent exploration of repetition, texture, and abstraction, transforming an everyday object into a fascinating study in monochrome.
10 No. Ten by Fred Bos
“Number 10” is an engaging photograph that captures the charm of urban architecture with a touch of rustic appeal. The juxtaposition of the bold red door with “Nº 10” painted on it against the clean lines of the adjacent white wall and green-framed door creates a striking contrast, both in colour and texture. The tree on the right side of the frame softens the architectural elements, adding a natural element and an inviting sense of life to the scene. The composition is thoughtfully balanced, with the chimney and wires above adding subtle details that enrich the narrative. Overall, “Number 10” is a well-composed study in contrast, texture, and urban character, capturing the beauty of everyday surroundings.
7 Birdie at the-17th by Heidi Beck
This photograph, titled Birdie on the 17th, cleverly captures the spirit of a number challenge. The composition draws immediate focus to the bird perched on the tee marker labelled with the number 17, creating a charming interaction between nature and the golfing environment. The soft, blurred bokeh background isolates the subject effectively, allowing the bird and marker to stand out with crisp clarity. The red tee marker adds a pop of colour, contrasting with the greens of the fairway and trees, enhancing the visual appeal. The image is not only well-framed but also exudes a lighthearted mood, blending the literal “birdie” with a scene. This photograph succeeds in blending humour, simplicity, and technical skill, making it both engaging and memorable.
04 Market Shops by Ligia Glover
This photograph captures a visually engaging perspective of a row of shops, each marked with sequential numbers, which aligns well with the theme of a number challenge. The repetition of the circular signs labelled with their corresponding numbers creates a rhythmic pattern that draws the viewer’s eye along the depth of the corridor. The subdued colours and soft natural light enhance the serene, almost contemplative atmosphere, while the two men seated in conversation add a touch of human warmth and activity to the scene. However, the highlight of light toward the right edge of the frame distracts slightly, pulling attention away from the central line of shops. A tighter crop to exclude this bright area might help maintain focus on the scene’s rich details and linear perspective. This adjustment could strengthen the composition by keeping the viewer’s eye centered on the tranquil rhythm of the shop fronts and walkway.
