AP – April 2026 “Statues & Landmarks”

This month’s theme was “Statues & Landmarks” and Avery Holt was very eager to see and critique this topic.

Avery Holt is a curator and visual culture critic whose work explores the intersection of narrative, place, and perception. With a background in documentary photography and environmental design, Holt has served on juries for international exhibitions and competitions celebrating creative reinterpretations of culture and tradition. Their curatorial philosophy centers on the quiet power of the unexpected — moments where familiar symbols are reframed through light, geography, or imagination.

Well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to those who were selected and are featured in the current April edition of the Algarve Plus Magazine.

The next theme for Algarve Plus for May will be: “Villages”.

Words of Wisdom

1st Place: 05 Arches at Praia do Prainha Alvor Philip Houtekier
Excellent framing through natural arch. Strong depth layering (cave – beach – sea stack). Texture in rock is rich. Compositionally one of the strongest landscape structures in the set.

2nd Place: 11 O Sapateiro by Ina Tanzer
Exceptional detail and craftsmanship in sculpture. Strong sharpness. Clean background separation. The mechanical texture is compelling and contemporary.

3rd Place: 18 The Light at the end of the world by Marijke McBean
Iconic Algarve landmark. Excellent color contrast (red lighthouse against blue sky). Strong clarity and technical execution. Clean composition and clear focal point.

4th Place: 02 The Vilamoura Lighthouse by Glyn Parry
Excellent minimalist composition. Strong use of negative space. The long exposure creates serenity and isolates the lighthouse beautifully. Color palette is cohesive and calming. Technically it is very clean.

5th Place: 15 Anchor Monument by Sharon Johnson
Excellent use of repetition and depth. Black and white treatment enhances texture and age. Strong foreground anchor leading into frame.
