AP – May 2026 “Villages”

Villages (of the Algarve) offer a compelling counterpoint to the region’s more familiar coastal imagery. Beyond the shoreline lies a network of communities shaped by time, tradition, and a quieter rhythm of life—where architecture, landscape, and human presence exist in close dialogue.

This photography challenge invites participants to engage with these spaces not simply as locations, but as living environments. From whitewashed facades and narrow cobbled streets to local markets, fading textures, and moments of daily routine, the essence of village life reveals itself through careful observation and thoughtful composition.

“Villages” as a theme encourages a shift in perspective: away from the grand and towards the intimate. It is an opportunity to explore atmosphere, character, and narrative—capturing both the visible and the implied. Whether through portraiture, detail, or wider contextual scenes, each image has the potential to reflect the identity and subtle complexities of these communities.

We encouraged our members to look beyond the obvious, to seek out authenticity, and to consider how light, timing, and framing can transform familiar settings into compelling visual stories. In doing so, this challenge aims not only to document place, but to interpret it—revealing the villages (in the Algarve) as spaces of cultural richness, memory, and enduring connection.

Avery Holt is a curator and visual culture critic whose work explores the intersection of narrative, place, and perception went to work once again performing her Judging duties. With a background in documentary photography and environmental design, Holt has served on juries for international exhibitions and competitions celebrating creative reinterpretations of culture and tradition. Their curatorial philosophy centers on the quiet power of the unexpected — moments where familiar symbols are reframed through light, geography, or imagination.

Well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to those who were selected and are featured in the current May edition of the Algarve Plus Magazine.

The next theme for Algarve Plus for July will be: “Early Mornings”.
