Free Choice – November 2023

The Final Print Exhibition of 2023 was a Free Choice theme, which is when all of our members pull out their best work to show off to the world their favourite genres and styles of photography.

This month, and due to some hard work during the year, we have returned to seeing 40 images on display, exhibited from 21 members and once again it was really a breath of fresh air to see the new members displaying their images. Well done to Bina Cline who is debuting in Print Exhibitions and collected 3rd Place!!
A big thanks goes out to the members of the recently formed Exhibition Task Force that took it upon themselves to handle printing, framing and mounting for members that can’t be present for presential exhibitions. Sharon Johnson, David Durrant and Daryl Gabin take a bow!

Finally a massive thanks to everyone who turned up to support the evening, especially those who brought some nibbles and gave the evening a little something special.
A final, but sad word: This exhibition was dedicated to another of our members, Christine Edwards, who earlier in November, lost her long battle with cancer. Our hearts go out to her husband John McComish and Family. R.I.P Christine.

For December, there will be an online Challenge which has the theme of “Close Ups of Insects“. We’re sure that this theme will attract some intriguing images. These will become available for viewing from the 29th of December.

Challenge – “Landscapes”

The Online Challenge brief for December is as follows:

Theme – Landscapes

Entries for this theme will depict images that fall under the following description.

A fundamental part of taking good landscape photos is firstly knowing what landscape photography is. Forget the dictionary definitions as well. What really matters is how it works in practice. So, what is landscape photography, and why is it so enticingly amazing? Picture this; Have you ever been out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nature, without a single person around? The feeling is immense when you can look around the world, and feel like you’re a part of it — that is landscape photography.

Landscape photography is capturing an image that embodies the spirit of the outdoors. It carries a sense of being there to see something incredible. When viewers look at your work, their hearts and souls should jump. You want them to feel the same emotions that you felt, standing in the middle of nature and bringing back that loving feeling.

There are many different types of landscapes, including but not limited to:

  • Coastal landscapes
  • Riverine landscapes
  • Arid landscapes
  • Mountain landscapes
  • Karst (caves) landscapes
  • Urban Landscapes

Landscape photographers love to create things. They love to compose photos, edit them, print them, and show them to anyone who wants to see them. At the same time, landscape photography is about having experiences. It’s about being in the middle of nature and soaking up everything around you.

So take this information and put it into practice when you go out and capture your image for this month’s Landscape Challenge.

Challenge – “Trees”

The Online Challenge brief for October is as follows:

Theme – Trees

Entries for this theme will depict images that fall under the following description.

Taking stunning photos of trees is, in itself, an art. There are many ways that you can create beautiful images with either a single tree or many trees, the choice is yours. Trees make amazing subjects and they are pretty easy to come across in general. So take note of some of these points and use them for this challenge.

  1. Single Tree Shots
  2. Look for Tree Tunnels
  3. Focus on some details of the tree (Leaves, Bark, Trunk or branches…
  4. Attempt various vantage points (Look up or look down not just straight ahead).
  5. Embrace colour and surrounding views.

There are loads more that you can try but these are a good place to start. The secret is encountering the perfect tree(s) as your subject(s).
We look forward to seeing your variations.

Challenge – “Wildlife”

The Online Challenge brief for August is as follows:

Theme – Wildlife

Entries for this theme will depict images that fall under the following description.

We’re looking for amazing wildlife shots and animal portraits that have a clean and simple composition to maximise their impact. Try to refrain from overcrowding your animal shots with lots of different elements as this can draw the eye away from your focal point and weaken the composition, (remember Rule of Thirds?)
One easy way to make your shots more minimal is to use a wide aperture (low F Number) for a shallow depth of field that will help blur your background and get rid of unrequired, disengaging elements in the background.

Have fun and challenge yourself with this brief and submit your best shots!

Challenge – “Sunsets”

June’s Online Challenge brief is as follows:

Theme – Sunsets

Entries for this theme will depict images that fall under the following description.

Sunset, also known as sundown, is the daily disappearance of the Sun over the horizon due to Earth’s rotation. As viewed from everywhere on Earth (except the North and South poles), the equinox Sun sets due west at the moment of both the Spring and Autumn equinox. As viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, the sun sets to the northwest (or not at all) in the Northern hemisphere’s spring and summer, and to the southwest in the autumn and winter; these seasons are reversed for the Southern Hemisphere.

The time of sunset is defined in astronomy as the moment when the upper limb of the Sun disappears below the horizon. Near the horizon, atmospheric refraction causes sunlight rays to be distorted to such an extent that geometrically the solar disk is already about one diameter below the horizon when a sunset is observed. We will be accepting images that have 1/1 of the Sun, 3/4 of the Sun, 1/2 of the Sun, 1/4 of the Sun and also 0/0 (totally beyond the horizon. So plenty of leeway to capture some great images.

Challenge – “Bridges”

April’s Online Challenge brief is as follows:

Theme – Bridges

Entries for this theme will depict images that fall under the following description.

bridge is a structure built to span a physical obstacle (such as a body of water, valley, road, or rail) without blocking the way underneath. It is constructed for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle, which is usually something that is otherwise difficult or impossible to cross. There are many different designs of bridges, each serving a particular purpose and applicable to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on factors such as the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it.

We are lucky in the Algarve as there are numerous bridges that we can find within an hour or so driving distance and also with a great variation in the type of bridges too.

Challenge – “Street Photography”

Octobers’ Online Challenge brief is as follows:

Brief – Street Photography

Entries for this theme will depict images that fall under the following description.

Wikipedia defines Street Photography as “photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents.” Typically, street photography is about capturing life in public areas at random moments in unstaged environments.  Furthermore, and contrary to its name, and what some think, street photography does not have to be done on the streets. You can do street photography anywhere.

A few tips for consideration when taking photos of this type are:

  • Know your camera settings (be sure to ensure that the lens and settings will give your a decent shot at the drop of a hat).
  • Be prepared for the decisive moment.
  • Shoot from a distance.
  • When possible, shoot from behind glass.
  • Shoot from behind people.
  • Use contrasting light.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask strangers to be subjects.

Note:  Without going into all the details, Portuguese law summarises Street Photography as follows:

  • Street photographers can take photographs without consent when they are public figures, public events or the image appears framed in public places.
  • They can broadcast (internet, exhibitions and books) images of people as long as they are in public spaces or for cultural purposes. It is only prohibited when it constitutes an offence to the honour, reputation or simple decorum of the person concerned. If the focus is on a particular person, it may not be displayed, published or commercially released without their consent.

Rules

  • Photos must be your work and not previously exhibited or displayed in APG events.
  • No restriction on when the photo was taken.
  • Photos can be colour, black & white or any monochrome colour.
  • Photos must be at least 1800px on the longest edge and can be Landscape or Portrait formats.
