February 8th – Tuesday Night Session

After a promising first session back in January, tonight’s gathering brought 12 members to the Museum from 8-10 pm to discuss the composition of images. The session was led by Paulo Viegas who walked us through some of the key topics and rules about composition.

  • the rule of thirds
  • leading lines
  • reflections
  • symmetry
  • decluttering of the photo (less is more)
  • diagonals
  • balancing subjects
  • foreground, middle ground and background
  • selective focus and bokeh

The discussion was also opened with regards to this month’s challenge theme “I Ate This” as we looked at some of the key points for taking photos of food as many seemed to think that was the only option for this theme. However, as the discussion evolved, there were some really creative ideas being thrown around, that, if folks can manage to find ways to pull them off, there will be some really striking images to be seen later this month.

The Session was very well laid out and presented and members that were present will now need to do their homework to present for the next Tuesday night session on the 8th March where we’ll be seeing some images that employ Leading Lines and The Rule of thirds before we get into some manual camera setting and the Exposure Triangle.

For the Homework element, as images will be discussed, please send them to us using the usual e-mail so that they can all be put on a Pen ahead of the session.

Be sure to bring your camera too!!

All members are welcome to come on over and join in. The more, the better. Remember that the objective of these sessions is to enable you to improve your skills as a photographer whatever your level may be.

Tuesday Night Sessions (Workshops) – Presentation

Members will be more than aware of the arrival of Tuesday Night Sessions. These sessions have been discussed on numerous occasions and referred to by many of you who hold down a regular nine-to-five job and are unable to make it to events that take place during work hours.

So we hear you and we are more than pleased to let you know that Tuesday Night Sessions will be a permanent fixture on the calendar this year. These sessions will be primarily led by Paulo Viegas but with support from other leading members of the group when and where necessary, depending on the discussion/ workshop being done.

The first TNS will take place on January the11th at 20:00 at the museum. This will be more of a discussion session for us to gauge and understand what topics and activities you’d like to see moving forwards.

  • What are the challenges you have as a photographer?
  • Look at the themes that are set for 2022. Do any of these present any challenges to you that you’d like to dive into?
  • Is there a specific area that you’d like to know more about?
  • How well do you know and understand the camera you have?

The discussion will be open and all members are welcome to come on over and join in. The more, the better. Remember that the objective of these sessions is to enable you to improve your skills as a photographer whatever your level may be.
