Image 5: Boating Fun Trip on Holiday
The setting sun help drive the impact of this image. Those bold yellows command your attention and help draw out some interesting tones in the surrounding encompassing cliffs as well as the water surrounding the board. The exposure and colors, highlights and shadows… all are handled as would be expected/hoped. The crop is perfect in my opinion, putting the touring boat at about the bottom 1/3 line with the left side blocked by rock, indicating the only route out is to the open water on the right. Supporting this is the angle of the boat which looks like it’s starting to head that way. And lets’s not overlook the fact that the sunlight is highlighting a hidden opening in the rock on the right’s shadow that would have otherwise gone unnoticed at this angle. Yep, there’s a lot to really like about this fine travel image.
Image 18: Sagres Surf Holiday
Perfectly timed is how I would describe this one. The men are captured mid-stride, each backlit by the warm setting sun, and obviously in mid-conversation as the one on the right is glancing at the other who is maybe half a step ahead of him. Are they talking about the beers they’re about to have? About that last epic wave, or perhaps the one that wiped them out and reminded them they needed more practice? The focus here is handled very nicely as the gentlemen and rocks are tack sharp while the background is softened up. This one makes you hear the ocean as you look at it.
Image 02: Awaiting Arrival
A great perspective and excellent choice to present this one in monochrome—it’s letting all the shapes and reflections and patterns and leading lines speak for themselves without the distraction of colors. Our subject is not only waiting patiently on the right at the end of all these curved leading lines, but he’s also waiting in the reflection on the left and the end of a secondary straight leading line. This image generates a lot of interest and begs to be studied deeper. I’ve tried to look past the glass into the hints of the interior. I’ve tried, but failed, to find the other people in reflection out on sidewalk. What others may have seen as ordinary, you’ve found its inner photographic beauty. Well seen.
